Butere Technical Training Institute (BTTI) is situated in Butere Sub-County in Kakamega County. It also borders Siaya County. The institute was established in 2015 by the Ministry of Education under the TVET Act, 2013, of Kenya’s laws. The first batch of trainees was admitted to the institute in January 2017. The Institute’s operations are also carried out as per the Government policies and procedures as spelt out in official documents and circulars. Being conscious of the government’s policy of industrialization by 2020 and Kenya Vision 2030, the institute’s goal is to produce skilled and employable graduates and provide Technical and Vocational Educational Training (TVET). In addition, the institute is mandated to conduct research.

The institute offers practical training skills to trainees at Artisan, Craft and Diploma levels. The training mainly leads the trainees to acquire practical skills, know-how and understanding. Such practical skills or know-how can be provided in a wide range of settings by multiple providers both in the public and private sectors.

The institute also has a platform for transforming traditional practices into modern, efficient, market-oriented, profit-making enterprises in Kenya.

The overall focus of the institute is to prepare TVET graduates effectively for employment. In this regard, the institute will contribute to reducing poverty by enabling more people to gain employment skills and generate income through employment. This addresses the needs of the underprivileged (children, women, disabled people and those in rural localities) and helps to overcome the barriers of exclusion.
